Back Pain

80% of American’s will experience back pain at some point in their life. There are many causes of back pain from strained muscles to full disk herniations.

Too often people’s back pain is written off as a simple sprain or strain and they are told to take advil and muscle relaxers. Too often, this is the incorrect diagnosis and the patient is left with ongoing pain and frustrated that they are not getting better.

To properly diagnose the cause of your back pain, a thorough history and exam should be done. If indicated, special tests like x-rays or MRI may be necessary. The following are typical causes of back pain:

Disc Protrusions: Pain is usually worse with sitting, standing in one place, driving, forward bending, twisting, lifting, coughing or sneezing.

Facet Syndrome: Pain is usually worse with extension or bending backwards. Can be caused from trauma or carrying heavy objects. May also be caused in the gym with hyper extending on dead lifts.

Sprain/Strain: Pain is usually paraspinal (off the side of the spine) caused by overexertion of the muscle tissue. Usually resolves in a few days without much treatment.

“Arthritis destroyed my hip joints and both had to be replaced: one in 1991 and the other in 2000. With years of training around the hips, my lower back suffered. Strength coach Deric Stockton put me on a path of developing core strength and stability.

With Dr. Hinde’s work on my lower back and Deric’s coaching, I was able to compete in a powerlifting meet and squat 375 lbs….something many thought was impossible. As a personal trainer, I recommend my clients work with Dr. Hinde in conjunction with strength training. He adds a critical component to their total health program.

I greatly appreciate what Dr. Hinde does for me and my clients.
